Le Glattier in Tignes A Scenic Off-Piste Descent Facing Lac du Chevril (Dam’s lake)

A Short but Striking Descent Overlooking an Alpine Lake

Le Glattier is a short but visually stunning off-piste descent on the south-facing slopes of Tignes, offering sweeping views over Lac du Chevril. Accessed from the top of the Chaudanne chairlift, this route gives you the sensation of skiing above the shimmering turquoise lake, surrounded by snowy alpine peaks.

With 470 metres of vertical drop, it’s not the longest line in the resort, but it stands out for its dramatic setting, natural reliefs, and the sense of isolation it provides. This route is best suited to advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders who can confidently navigate uneven terrain and manage a return via the valley.

Quick Access from the Chaudanne Chairlift

Start from the top of the Chaudanne chairlift at 2430m. From there, head southwest, directly facing the Lac du Chevril far below.

The descent begins with open slopes, allowing you to choose your line freely. As you move further down, the terrain becomes more enclosed, with features and relief changes that require precise reading and adaptation.

A Visually Striking Descent

What makes Le Glattier so memorable is the spectacular scenery. Throughout the descent, your eyes are drawn to:

  • The shimmering blue waters of Lac du Chevril
  • Rugged rocky walls framing the route
  • The southern light that amplifies the contrast between snow and lake

Many riders pause mid-run to take photos—the illusion of skiing above a lake is simply too striking to ignore. But despite its beauty, this is a real off-piste line, with real risks.

A Technical Exit Route

After following the natural gully down, the descent ends near the Glattier road tunnel, by the departmental road linking Tignes to Tignes 1800.

You’ll need to:

  • Carefully descend the final snowbank or icy slope near the tunnel
  • Cross over to the shuttle stop on the roadside
  • Return to the ski area via the Tignes shuttle free bus (Tignes Le Lac – Tignes 1800)

This exit outside the lift network requires planning—especially in bad weather or if you’re tired.
