Freerando vs classic hiking What's the difference?

Two ways to enjoy the mountains, two unique experiences

The mountains offer countless ways to explore them. Among these, two disciplines stand out: freerando and classic hiking. While both embrace movement, exploration, and nature immersion, they differ in spirit, equipment, and sensations.

At Snocool, whether you’re into off-piste skiing in Val d’Isère, freeride adventures in Tignes, or wild terrain in Sainte-Foy, we guide you safely through these unique experiences.

What is freerando?

A blend of ski touring and freeride

Freerando (short for “freeride randonnée”) combines the uphill effort of ski touring with the thrill of off-piste descents. The goal is simple: reach untouched slopes and enjoy powder snow far from the crowds, without relying on ski lifts.

The spirit of freerando

Freerando appeals to those who love the climb but live for the descent. It’s your ticket to iconic runs like the Vallon de la Sache or the Grande Motte North Face.

The specific gear

Freerando requires hybrid equipment:

  • Light skis with touring bindings
  • Climbing skins for ascents
  • Versatile boots for comfort uphill and precision downhill
  • Safety gear (avalanche beacon, shovel, probe)

What is classic hiking?

A gentler approach to the mountains

Classic hiking, on foot or with snowshoes, follows marked or unmarked trails at your own pace. It focuses more on observation, relaxation, and discovery than on technical performance.

Accessible to everyone

Unlike freerando, classic hiking requires minimal equipment – sturdy shoes, poles, and maybe snowshoes in winter – making it perfect for families and beginners.

How to choose between them?

Match your skills and goals

If you’re a confident skier who enjoys physical effort and off-piste challenges, freerando is for you. If you prefer a relaxed outing with friends or family, stick to classic hiking.

Safety first

In freerando, safety is key. Our Snocool instructors and guides will help you prepare, select the right gear, and learn avalanche safety skills.
