A Natural Black Run for Off-Piste Enthusiasts
Cristal Dark is a north-facing ungroomed black run located on the wild side of Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise. Starting from the top of the Aiguille chairlift, it’s a favourite among experienced skiers and snowboarders for its untouched snow, raw terrain, and steep descent.
Unlike regular pistes, Cristal Dark is never groomed. Snow conditions vary depending on storms, wind, and skier traffic, offering a wild but safe experience—officially allowed, yet completely natural freeride terrain within the resort boundaries.

Access from the Aiguille Chairlift
There are two main ways to reach Cristal Dark:
- Most direct: From the top of the Aiguille chairlift (2600m), circle around the patroller’s hut and drop into the Morillon black run. At the point where the lift crosses the piste, a subtle traverse to the right leads to the Cristal Dark entry.
- Official signage: Follow the Aiguille red run. Shortly after a narrow col section, look for signs on your left pointing to Cristal Dark.
Both approaches require a short traverse but are easily manageable for intermediate to advanced skiers.
A Dynamic Slope Shaped by Skiers
Cristal Dark is too steep to groom mechanically. Its natural surface evolves throughout the season:
- Early winter: Often covered in light, fresh powder
- After a warm spell: May become hard-packed or bumpy
- During heavy snowfall: A powder haven
Because of its north-facing aspect, the snow stays cold and preserved throughout the season. Freeriders effectively shape the terrain themselves, making every descent unique.
