Off-Piste Skiing at Col du Granier, Sainte-Foy A Wild 1430m Descent

Off-Piste Skiing at Col du Granier, Sainte-Foy: A Wild 1430m Descent

A Legendary Backcountry Run in the Heart of Nature

Tucked away from marked trails and lifts, Col du Granier is one of the most spectacular off-piste descents in Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise. Dropping 1430 metres from alpine ridges to the village valley, this run takes you through a pristine variety of terrain—steep slopes, forest trails, and snowy orchards.

This route is reserved for advanced to expert skiers seeking wilderness skiing far from the crowds. Its location and northeast-facing orientation often ensure exceptional powder snow, sculpted by the wind.

Access from the Sainte-Foy Ski Area

The starting point is at the top of La Marquise chairlift, 2530 metres above sea level. From there, ski down the Camp Filluel piste. After a few hundred metres, where the piste widens, leave it and traverse right with some stepping up (on foot or using the side-step technique) heading northeast.

This short 100m ascent leads to Col du Granier, the gateway to a stunning wild descent.

The Mercuel Valley: A Pristine and Committing Terrain

Once you pass the col, you drop into the Mercuel valley—a vast open area known for its untouched snow, open bowls and larch forests. While the terrain often holds deep powder, it is also wind-affected and potentially avalanche-prone.

Navigating this zone safely requires strong avalanche awareness, the proper safety gear (transceiver, shovel, probe), and ideally, a qualified ski guide or off-piste instructor.

A Progressive Descent from Peaks to Meadows

What makes this route unique is the natural progression in landscape. Starting in a high alpine setting, you move into soft wooded areas and finish among snow-covered fields near the village.

  • Upper section: wide, open slopes in a high mountain atmosphere
  • Middle section: playful lines through larch and Swiss pine forests
  • Lower section: snowy pastures and orchards near Sainte-Foy Chef-Lieu

This variety creates a long, flowing descent that’s perfect for freeride skiers who enjoy rhythm and terrain changes.
