Can you heli-ski in France? You sure can with the best heli-skiing specialists!

What is heli-skiing?

Heli-skiing is one of the most exhilarating ways to experience the mountains. Imagine flying above the peaks in a helicopter, far from the ski lifts and crowds, then landing on untouched snow to enjoy a breathtaking descent through unspoilt alpine terrain.
Unlike resort skiing, heli-skiing is all about adventure and freedom. The helicopter takes you to high-altitude drop zones that would be otherwise inaccessible. There, your guide picks the best line for your ability and the conditions. No tracks, no queues, just you, your skis, and pure, pristine powder.
With Snocool, you don’t need to be a pro. We make heli-skiing in France accessible to strong intermediate and advanced skiers who want a taste of big-mountain adventure. Our guides know how to adapt each descent to your level, ensuring both thrills and safety.

What are the prerequisites for heli-skiing?

You don’t need to be a freeride champion or backcountry expert. But heli-skiing is not for beginners either.
You should be comfortable:

  • Skiing off-piste in variable snow conditions (powder, crust, spring snow)
  • Managing moderate to steep slopes (30°–40°)
  • Performing controlled turns in narrow spaces, including between trees
  • Skiing for longer periods without stopping

You’ll also need:

  • A good physical condition – heli-skiing involves long runs at high altitude
  • Some experience with avalanche safety gear – don’t worry, we provide training
  • A sense of adventure and adaptability – alpine weather changes quickly

Not sure you’re ready? Book a freeride coaching session in Tignes or a guided off-piste day in Val d’Isère before your heli trip. We’ll help you build the skills and confidence needed.

What are the best places to heli-ski in France?

Here’s a twist: heli-skiing is technically prohibited within French territory. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it while staying in the French Alps.

Thanks to our location in Savoie, Snocool operates heli-skiing trips across the nearby Italian and Swiss borders, all accessible in under 15 minutes of flight.

Tignes & Val d’Isère

These legendary resorts are not only fantastic for on-piste skiing—they’re also perfect launchpads for heli-skiing. We fly you from Tignesor Val d’Isère to:

  • Valgrisenche: Italy’s heli-skiing mecca, offering wide open bowls and endless descents
  • Petit St Bernard Pass: Stunning alpine terrain with varied options for every level
  • Ruitor Glacier: A majestic, glaciated playground for powder lovers

Sainte-Foy Tarentaise

A hidden gem tucked away from the crowds, Sainte-Foy is one of our favourite bases. Its strategic location gives you direct heli access to:

  • Remote Italian valleys
  • Wild, lesser-known descents
  • A chance to ski in total silence, surrounded by nature

La Rosière

Situated right on the border, La Rosière offers one of the quickest heli-ski transitions into Italy. A few minutes in the air and you’re deep in some of the best powder terrain in the Alps.
Snocool works exclusively with certified local helicopter operators and experienced international mountain guides. All drop zones are carefully chosen based on snow conditions, safety, and your skiing level.

How much does heli-skiing cost and where can I find affordable heli-skiing?

Heli-skiing is a premium experience, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of reach.

Here’s a general idea of heli-skiing prices with Snocool:

  • 1 drop: from €295–€650 per person

All packages include:

  • Helicopter transfer
  • Supervision by a qualified high-mountain guide
  • Avalanche safety gear: transceiver, shovel, probe
  • Group safety briefing
  • Descent(s) adapted to your level and snow conditions

Looking for affordable heli-skiing? Here are a few tips:

  • Book as a group of 4 to 5 people to share helicopter costs

What equipment do you need for heli-skiing?

Your regular alpine gear won’t cut it here. You’ll need the right equipment to make the most of your heli-ski day.

Recommended gear

  • Freeride skis or snowboard: at least 100mm underfoot, ideally with rocker for float
  • Avalanche transceiver (DVA) – provided and explained before the trip
  • Shovel and probe – also provided
  • Airbag backpack – strongly recommended (available for rent)
  • Helmet – compulsory
  • Goggles – with clear or low-light lenses if needed
  • Warm, layered clothing – you’ll be skiing in high alpine zones with variable weather
  • Snacks and water – long runs = big energy burn!

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything—Snocool works with trusted rental partners to provide top-quality freeride gear. We’ll make sure everything is ready before your flight.
